MESSAGE OF THIS POST: Three ways for getting out of an awkward conversation.
Ever get into a conversation with someone at an event that you quickly realize is going no where, that its just a guy pitching you? You know the type “Blah blah blah increased engagement blah blah amazing metric data blah twitter blah blah blah social media…and we’ll have a million users within the month!” Here are three ways to get yourself out.
1) The first is taught to me by my friend and previous business partner, Christian Perry. As the pitch begins, have a business card ready. Listen for a moment; act engaged. As they pause to take a break, interrupt momentarily with “You know, this actually sounds really interesting, but it’s really hard to listen here. Could you email me to touch base?” Hand them the card. They presumably respond “Oh, sure!” and you quickly interject “Thanks! It was great meeting you!” and duck off.
2) If that seems a bit complicated, there is always the: “Oh! My friend just walked in. I’m really sorry to duck off, but I’ve wanted to catch him for awhile. It was great talking to you!” Problem with this is that you need to have someone nearby you can enter in to a conversation with.
3) And seriously, I’ve used the “Listen, it’s been great talking to you, but I have to run to the bathroom really quick” excuse. Problem with that: might raise an eyebrow that you had to use the bathroom so desperately. Heheh.
